Humanities

The Humanities Learning Area includes the subjects of History, Geography, and the Commerce subjects of Economics, Business Management, Legal Studies, Commerce and Accounting.

The Humanities Key Learning Area is based on sound knowledge of the narrative of Australian history and other periods of history; knowledge of local, regional and international physical environments; and knowledge of the operation of key economic, legal and political institutions. It encourages active investigation and critical questioning of information in a variety of forms: oral, written, visual and electronic. Humanities encourages students to ask questions and search for answers.

Learning in Humanities is based on two interrelated sets of activities:

  • Investigation: This develops students' skills in researching, processing and interpreting data. It is the foundation for analysing events and issues, constructing hypotheses and making informed judgments.
  • Communication: This develops students' skills in using various forms of communication - spoken, written, graphical, statistical and electronic. Students learn to collect, process, analyse and present information using a range of formats and a variety of media.

Year 11 History

UNIT 1
Unit 1 focuses in and around Germany during the period of history between the end of the First World War and end of the beginning of the Second World War. It considers the new forms of economic and political organisations that emerged and analyses the social changes and cultural expressions of the time.

UNIT 2
Unit 2 concentrates on the increasing interplay between domestic and regional events with international influences playing significant roles. This theme provides the opportunity to investigate principal events of post war history, such as the Cold and Vietnam Wars. Further studies include the struggle for dominance amongst world powers, social movements in Vietnam and the growth of internationalism.

Legal Studies at Year 11

Legal Studies at Scoresby Secondary College delves into the fascinating world of the law in all its complexities. Students learn about why we need laws and what makes a law effective. We also investigate law making through parliament and the courts.

Our first excursion (which occurs for students in Year 11 Legal Studies) takes us to the courts, either the Melbourne Magistrates Court or the County and Supreme Courts. Students view actual cases and are taken on a tour of the court building. This is a fascinating glimpse of the courts at work, with real life case studies taking place.

We then look at the formal court hierarchy and review the procedures used in courts. Students will investigate types of crimes and how these crimes affect others besides the defendants. Students will also look at the role of police in criminal offences, and police powers.

When we begin our study of punishment of criminal offences, students are given the opportunity to attend an exciting excursion to HM Prison, Barwon. This successful program has operated at Barwon for 10 years and gives students the opportunity to speak to long-term prisoners, the Governor of the prison and prison psychologist.

During Unit 2 students have a wide variety of topics from which to select for their research. Topics may include:

Legal Issues in Technology, such as:

  • Gender Reassignment;
  • Surrogacy;
  • Genetic Technology;
  • Organ Donation; and
  • Euthanasia.
Also, students may study Family Issues, including:
  • Child Abuse;
  • Domestic Violence; and
  • Adoption.

We also study Wills and Inheritance.

Students enjoy the variety of topics available in the Legal Studies curriculum.
